Amarcord (1973)
Federico Fellini’s Oscar-winning (Best Foreign Film) feature–a rich, rambling, lighthearted, year-long visit with the occupants of a small Italian coastal town in the 1930’s. If you’ve seen the film, you’ll remember the scene in which Teo, the patriarch’s institutionalized brother, is taken on a family outing during which he climbs a tree and won’t come down, the whole while shouting “I want a woman”. The hospital staff is summoned and they send a dwarf nun up a ladder to fetch him. The film is a long one (over 2 hours), and has an indulgent pace more typical of films of this era–not suitable for those with ADHD.
