Die Fälscher (The Counterfeiters) (2007)
An Austrian film, won the Oscar for best foreign language film this year. At least I can’t complain about the German language in this film! Sie war echt, aber was sonst? Otherwise I thought the portrayal of events was rather sanitized, with almost made-for-TV production values, and a really grating loud and obnoxious harmonica music theme (sounded like an accordion on steroids). The conflict was your basic “what would you do to stay alive”. But no one has yet come close to Lina Wertmüller’s Pasqualino Settebellezze (Seven Beauties) (1975).
The Pianist (2002)
Yes, Adrien Brody did a fine job. And yes, the film was technically excellent. And yes, the holocaust did happen and was horrific. However this film’s portrayal of that reality was a Hollywood comic book version. Here we are in the Jewish ghetto in Warsaw, Poland, and everyone is California clean and speaking English. And the Germans are, almost to a man, truncheon-wielding monsters. Oy, weh.
