The Newcomers (2000)
I’m doing a Paul Dano filmography walk. This one was pure tripe. I strongly advise you to avoid it.
L.I.E. (2001)
A film that won a number of awards at various LGBT film festivals (although I don’t know why, considering the trafficking in stereotypes), and featuring a young Paul Dano (he graduated from HS in 2002) and a not so young Brian Cox. Nonetheless, a well made film.
There Will Be Blood (2007)
Aside from the weird, violent, and unaccountably lawless story, the fidelity of which to Upton Sinclair’s book I cannot vouch for (although pundits have called the association “loose”), I thought Daniel Day Lewis’ performance was wonderful. Paul Dano also did a creditable job. I was not bored once the film got rolling, even at 158 minutes. On the script/directorial side, the transition from Daniel as a reasonable businessman and loving father to raving besotted lunatic was rather abrupt. Ditto his son’s transition.
